Fleas & Ticks:

Ticks are tiny parasites that live off the blood of animals and humans. This pest extracts blood by embedding its body in the epidermis of a host, and keeps scabs from forming through excreting an anticoagulant. Ticks can cause a wide array of diseases including Lyme disease, Babesiosis, Ehrlichiosis and tick paralysis. Common in SWFL:  Brown Dog and Deer Ticks.

Fleas are wingless insects, 1/16 to 1/8-inch long, that are agile, usually dark colored (for example, the reddish-brown of the cat flea), with tube-like mouth parts adapted to feeding on the blood of their hosts. These parasites feed on pets and rodents, and can leave itchy bite marks on humans. Flea bites can cause allergic reactions, skin infections and bacterial infections such as cat-scratch fever, typhus and plague. Common in SWFL:  Sand, Cat and Dog Fleas
